The wonders of Syskey

—Wonders of Syskey—

Many of us use third party software like (Winlocker, Bootlocker etc) in order to safeguard the booting process of Windows. These software snakes the system in the booting process ask for a password to continue the booting process. Some of these softwares much smarter than they look. They send user data once the system has booted though emails if the user is connected to the internet…and then, then what, your system is more or less history!!!
___________________________________________________________________

This is an interesting way to increase the security of your machine further. With the help of this tip, you will need to insert a special floppy disk(if you are really outdated) that you make in order to log on. If you loose the disk, you are locked out. FOREVER!(optional)
Click on start run and then type in SYSKEY, hit return(ENTER key)

On the first window that opens you shall need to click on UPDATE.Click on UPDATE and select PASSWORD STARTUP:
Enter your desired password twice in the boxes provided and finally clicking on OK saves the settings. From the next time you boot your system a popup opens (just after the Windows XP Boot up animation) asking for password to continue.
The update window appears as below.:

Lock your USB ports…[no software required]

To do this you have to make a registry tweak that will prevent writing to the usb port in Windows XP or Vista/7.

1) Go to 'Start\Run' and type 'Regedit'.
2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control.
3) Here add a new folder on the left pane by right clicking on it and selecting 'New|Key'.
4) Name this folder 'StorageDevicePolicies'. 5) Click this new folder and in the window on the right create a new DWORD value, label it WriteProtect, give it avalue of '1'. 6) Now users will not be able to write any data on the USB.

To turn it off just set the value to '0'

and see, no one will be able to transfer data through USB from your system!

What actually "Refresh" option on Windows Desktop do ?

Most of the people dont know what really happens when they click the refresh option in either Desktop on in any of the folders? This article is to throw some light for those who thinks like sam

ok! Here we go There is a guy named sam,he used to refresh his desktop at regular intervals as if to improve the performance.
What he really thinks is “He is making system processes to run faster when he click refresh” But the point to think here is you(Sam) are asking the system to do a little more(your refreshes) while its already busy doing something else.
Instead of making things fast, you are delaying the processing as now it also needs to re-draw the whole display bcoz Refreshing means re-drawing the complete display on the screen..

Random Acess Memory and system speed booster!

Start some heavy applications like any or big text files HD video…(for checking process differences)

Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to open Windows Task Manager and click Processes tab and sort the list in descending order on Mem Usage. You will notice that app*.EXE will be somewhere at the top, using multiple MBs of memory.(may be in 1000s). just end usless processes…

Now switch to app. and simply minimize it. (ctrl+tab) (Don’t use the Minimize All Windows option of the task bar).

Now go back to the Windows Task Manager and see where your app*.EXE is listed. Most probably you will not find it at the top. You will typically have to scroll to the bottom of the list to find Word. Now check out the amount of RAM it is using. Surprised? The memory utilization has reduced by a huge amount.

Minimize each application that you are currently not working on by clicking on the Minimize button & you can increase the amount of available RAM by a substantial margin. Depending upon the number and type of applications you use together, the difference can be as much as 50 percent of extra RAM.

In any multitasking system, minimizing an application means that it won’t be utilized by the user right now. Therefore, the OS automatically makes the application use virtual memory & keeps bare minimum amounts of the code in physical RAM.
